If you’ve spent any time grinding Stardust in Pokémon GO, you’ve probably asked yourself this question at least once: should I power up my Pokémon now, or wait until after I evolve it?
It’s one of the most common questions new and returning trainers ask — and the answer is simple, even though a lot of guides make it sound complicated.
Always evolve first, then power up.
Let’s break down exactly why, using a classic example every trainer knows: Magikarp evolving into Gyarados.
Powering up a Pokémon before it evolves is one of the most common ways trainers waste Stardust and Candy. Here’s the golden rule to remember:
Evolve first. Power up second. Every single time.
The reason comes down to how Combat Power (CP) scales with a Pokémon’s base stats — and those base stats change dramatically the moment a Pokémon evolves.
Every Pokémon has base stats for Attack, Defense, and Stamina (HP). These base stats are what CP is calculated from, along with your Pokémon’s level and individual values (IVs).
When you power up a Pokémon, you’re spending Stardust and Candy to raise its level, which increases its CP based on its current base stats. If you power up a Pokémon before evolving it, you’re multiplying your Stardust against a weaker, pre-evolution base stat line. The moment it evolves, its base stats jump — but the leveling you already paid for doesn’t “carry over” any bonus. You’ll simply end up needing to spend more Stardust afterward to get it back to a high level, because evolution itself doesn’t cost Stardust — only Candy.
In other words: the same amount of Stardust gets you far more CP when it’s applied to the evolved form’s higher stats than when it’s applied to the pre-evolved form.
This is the example every Pokémon GO player eventually learns the hard way, so let’s walk through it clearly.
Magikarp is famously one of the weakest Pokémon in the game. Its base Attack and Stamina stats are low, and no matter how many times you power it up, its CP ceiling stays painfully low. A fully powered-up Magikarp at your trainer level might only reach a few hundred CP.
Gyarados, on the other hand, has dramatically higher base stats across the board. The same exact Magikarp, once evolved into Gyarados, can reach a CP in the thousands — often 5 to 10 times higher — using the exact same IVs.
Now imagine this scenario:
All that Stardust you spent powering up the Magikarp gave you a tiny CP boost on a Pokémon whose stats were about to change completely. If you’d evolved first and then spent that same Stardust powering up the Gyarados, you would have ended up with a dramatically higher final CP for the exact same amount of Stardust spent.
This is why “power up before evolving” is considered one of the biggest Stardust-wasting mistakes new trainers make.
There’s one narrow situation where powering up before evolving can make sense: when you’re trying to hit a specific CP threshold for a PvP league (like the Great League’s 1500 CP cap or Ultra League’s 2500 CP cap) and you’re deciding between two different evolution candy investments. In advanced PvP optimization, trainers sometimes calculate final stats before committing Candy to evolution, using CP and IV calculators to simulate outcomes first.
But for 95% of trainers just building out their Pokédex or maximizing a Pokémon for raids and gyms, this doesn’t apply. Evolve first, then power up.
