If you’ve ever plugged your Pokémon’s stats into a CP calculator and gotten a number that just doesn’t match what you see in-game, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common frustrations trainers run into, and in almost every case, the calculator isn’t wrong — the inputs are. CP math is unforgiving: a single wrong value anywhere in the formula throws off the entire result. Below are the four mistakes we see most often, why they happen, and how to fix them.
Stardust cost is one of the fastest ways to identify a Pokémon’s level, but it’s also one of the easiest values to get wrong. Every level from 1 to 50 has its own Stardust cost to power up, and those costs don’t increase in a straight line — they jump in stages as the level gets higher. Trainers often assume the cost scales evenly, guess a nearby number, or accidentally read the cost for the next power-up instead of the one they just paid. The problem is that Stardust cost is usually how a calculator determines your Pokémon’s exact level in the first place. If that number is off by even one tier, the calculator locks in the wrong level, and every downstream value — CP, HP, and IV percentage — comes out wrong too. The fix is simple: check the Stardust cost shown on the power-up screen at the exact moment before you tap “Power Up,” and enter that exact figure. Once a Pokémon becomes your Best Buddy, it receives a permanent +1 level boost on top of its normal level cap — and that boost applies even beyond the usual level 50 ceiling for wild-caught Pokémon. This is one of the most overlooked variables in CP calculations, mostly because it isn’t visible anywhere on the Pokémon’s main stats screen. You have to know it’s active. If you calculate CP without accounting for the Best Buddy bonus, your result will consistently land lower than what actually shows in-game, which makes it look like the calculator is broken when really it’s missing one input. The boost effectively shifts the Pokémon’s CP multiplier up by half a level’s worth of stats, which can matter a lot for high-IV Pokémon near the top of the CP curve. Before calculating, check the Pokémon’s info screen for the Best Buddy heart icon. Shadow and Purified Pokémon don’t follow the same CP math as their regular counterparts, because their Attack and Defense stats are adjusted by a fixed multiplier. Shadow Pokémon get a boost to Attack and a reduction to Defense, while Purified Pokémon receive a small flat bonus to all three core stats. Neither change is obvious just by looking at the Pokémon, especially once it’s been in your collection for a while and the “Shadow” tag fades into the background. This is a frequent source of confusion because a Shadow Pokémon’s CP can look unexpectedly high for its level, while a Purified Pokémon’s CP looks slightly higher than a standard one at the same IVs. If you calculate either as if it were a normal Pokémon, the numbers won’t line up. Always check whether the Pokémon is Shadow or Purified before entering its details, and use a calculator that explicitly accounts for those modifiers rather than one built only for standard Pokémon.
This one trips up more trainers than any other on this list. HP is one of the three stats used to help pin down a Pokémon’s IVs, but it only works as a reference point when it reflects the Pokémon’s full, undamaged HP. If a Pokémon just came out of a Gym battle, a raid, or a Team GO Rocket fight, its current HP will be lower than its maximum — sometimes drastically so. Entering that reduced number into a calculator throws off the IV estimate completely, because the tool has no way of knowing the Pokémon isn’t at full health. The result is usually an IV spread that looks unusually low or oddly inconsistent with the Pokémon’s Attack and Defense values. Before running any calculation, heal the Pokémon fully — either at a Gym, with Potions, or by letting it rest — and confirm the HP shown is its maximum. Once healed, the HP value will accurately reflect the underlying stat used in the formula.
